At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 16th December Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A smaller show of 259 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer with trade again being good for all classes.

Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor sold the top priced Limousin cow for 917kg at 141.5p totalling £1297 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill’s run of cows topped at 793kg at 159.5p totalling £1264 for a Limousin x and 793kg at 155.5p totalling £1233 for Blonde bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Mr Neil Barclay, South Road’s run of cows topped at 695kg at 175kg totalling £1219 for a British Blue cow bought by Owain Llyr and a Simmental cow sold for 647kg at 182.5p totalling £1180 to Sean McGimpsey.  DA Harrison, Hill House Farm’s run of well finished cows topped at 775kg at 156.5p totalling £1212 to Messrs Roberts and 712kg at 167.5p totalling £1192 for a Limousin bought by Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Harrison, Baggrow Farm sold a 37 month old Limousin x bullock for 798kg at 160.5p totalling £1280 to Les Fell and a 38 month old Simmental x bullock for 723kg at 156.5p totalling £1131 to David Holmes.

A mixed show of Black & White cows were on offer with Messrs Paul & Son, Greigsland selling a Holstein x heifer for 775kg at 136.5p totalling £1056 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Holliday, Newbampton Farm sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 785kg at 123.5p totalling £969 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Graham & Son, Campfield’s run of cows topped at 897kg at 107.5p totalling £964 for a Holstein x bought by Steven Bowes. Messrs Brough, Langfauld sold a Holstein x cow for 795kg at 119.5p totalling £950 to Dovecote Park.

Messrs Frame & Co, Birks Farm sold an Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 795kg at 148.5p totalling £1180 to Les Fell.

PRIME BULLS – On Monday 16th December Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime bulls. A total of 115 bulls were forward with trade slightly easier on the week but still in good demand. Topping the sale was a British Blue bull from Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray selling for £1616 to Mr Les Fell. Welsh Blacks from Messrs Hyslop, Gillrig sold for £1528 again to Mr Les Fell. Limousins topped at £1422 from RC Mitchell & Son, Mirkbooths selling to Mr Helliwell, Rochdale. Top pence per kilo was achieved twice from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor and Messrs Struthers, Collielaw selling their Limousin bulls for 217.5p to Me Helliwell and Brookwood Abattoir respectfully.

PRIME CATTLE – A smaller and plainer entry of 44 prime steers and heifers forward selling to a very similar trade to that of last week. Top overall of £1544.66 for a Devon Red heifer from Messrs Maw Wintershields Farm, Carlisle. This was also joint top price per kilo of 228.5p and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

Limousin bullocks peaked at £1540 from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and top pence per kilo of 228.5p was received by Messrs Story, Newbigging, Carlisle and purchased by David Whaite.

PRIME SHEEP – At the weekly sale of Prime lambs a smaller show of 2161 head met a great demand with an overall average of 195p (SQQ 201.7p) being achieved.  Heavy lambs sold to a leading price of £120 from Messrs M Telford & Son, Edenlin, Carlisle which was purchased by Mr John Worsley.  Messrs Laird, Unity sold the top price per kilo at 286.7p which was paid for an outstanding Dutch Texel which sold to Mr Andrew Dawson,  closely followed at 281.4p for a smart pen of 9 Beltex (41.5kg £116.80) from DH & JM Murray, The Throp, Gilsland to Mr John Worsley.  Suffolks sold to £100 for heavies from Messrs JJ Brough, Clappers Farm, Wigton and to 200.7p from Messrs Harrison Aimshaugh, Alston.

Mules met a good enquiry to a top of £92.50 from Messrs J W Smith-Jackson, Hightown, Haltwhistle and to 192p for a pen of 48 from Messrs N C Marston, Millstone Moor, Cockermouth.  Commercial types were very good to sell with a run of 175 Texel x mules lambs from Messrs Atkinson, Low Barn averaging £88.75 to a top of £103 for a pen of 26.

CAST EWES AND RAMS – At the weekly sale of cast rams and ewes all classes were met by a roaring trade and all sheep were in high demand.  Topping todays sale at £129.50 were three cracking Texel ewes from Messrs Horsley, Woodhouse.  A great run of ewes from Messrs Shirvington, Woodbank Farm averaged £110.  Horned ewes continue to sell well topping at £60 were two ewes from Dan Charnock, Roweltown.  A great pen of 30 Swaledale ewes from Messrs Graham Wydencleughside Farm sold at £58 per head.  Rams also sold well with a Zwartbles selling to £96.50 and £93.50 from Messrs Blamire, Mid Whinnow.  More ewes could have been sold with ease to a strong ringside of buyers.
