Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 23^rd December Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep. A smaller show of 77 cast cows were forward, with the majority being dairy bred cows, however trade for all was great throughout.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head run of Holstein cross cows topped at 855kg, 117.5ppk or £1004 to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 1002kg, 99.5ppk or £996.99 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hutchinson, The Hill run of British Friesian cows topped ay 759kg, 121.5ppk or £922. Messrs Crichton & Son, Limekiln Farm sold a Fleckvieh heifer for 660kg, 138.5ppk or £914 to Mr Sean McGimpsey. With other heifers from the same home to 142.5ppk or 141.5ppk. Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill sold the top priced British Blue cross cow for 661kg, 139.5ppk or £922 to Mr Kirkpatrick.

Messrs Armstrong & Sons, Broomhills sold a Limosuin stock bull for 997kg, 119.5ppk or £1191 to Mr Kirkpatrick,

PRIME SHEEP – The weekly sale of 2733 prime lambs were forward, with all classes of lambs sold well to average 206.7ppk (SQQ 211.9ppk), with export 40kg and heavy lambs seeing the best trade.

The sale topped at £114.80 for a great pen of 8 Texel cross lambs shown by Messrs Harrison, Sceugh Farm, Southwaite which sold to Mr Robert Skelton. Their run of 33 lambs averaged £110.84 a head. Topping per kilo at 287.6ppk was a pair of fantastic Beltex cross lambs from Messrs A & A Little, Holland, Penton which sold to Mr A Dawson. Messrs Sanderson, Swallowdene, Dearham sold a great run of 39kg lambs to £101.85 (258.75ppk) to a top of £106.80. Also making the trip from Dearham was Tom & Julian Airey who sold 44 great Continental cross lambs to average £103.37.

Mules lambs were slightly steadier than of recent times, to a top of £99 from Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hills, Workington, and to a top of 196ppk for a pen of 23 from Messrs Hope, Albierigg, Canonbie.,
