On Monday 12th July Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.  

PRIME BULLS: A smaller entry of only 63 Prime bulls forward seeing a flyer of a trade throughout once again for all classes.  Quality was less overall and a shortage of biggest best pure bred bulls was evident.  Top overall was an outstanding British Blue cross bred bull from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan selling 796kgs to £1922.34 and purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie.  Messrs Hunter sold the second top price of £1753.20 for a 729 kg Limousin and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Wigton sold another to £1732.73 and Messrs Muir, Cleughbrae, Dumfries to £1692.88 for another purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale.  Top overall pence per kilo of 241.5p and 240.5p were paid to Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk and their aforementioned bulls.  Dairy bred bulls very easily sold to a top of £1304.30 for a Holstein Friesian from Smallthwaite Farms, Penrith purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and top price per kilo of 195.5p was paid to Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton purchased by Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE: Yet another small entry of only 32 Prime steers and heifers forward proving a shortage resulting in an absolute fireball trade, seeing heifers peak at £1918.66 for a 769 kgs Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Others to £1706.90 from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle and £1679.14 again from Halfway Well Farm.  Top overall pence per kilo of 273.5p was paid to Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm, Bishop Auckland for a Limousin cross and was purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale, others to 270.5p from the same home and were purchased by Kings Butchers, Scotland.  British Blues crosses from the same home peaked at 261.5p and was again purchased by A & D Meats.

Steers saw a day’s top of £1825.13 from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well and £1813.32 from Messrs Story, Newbiggin both of which were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Three Limousin cross steers sold over the 250ppk mark with two being purchased by Pioneer Foods and one to R & JP Mulholland, Great Orton, Butchers, Carlisle.  Many more desperately required on a weekly basis.  Please advise all entries by call or text to auctioneer Grant Anderson 07872 129274.

CAST COWS: An outstanding show of 261 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to an increased ringside of 25 buyers which ensured the dearest trade to date.  **Please note that this report is for CAST COWS not PRIMESTOCK**

Messrs Wainwright, Todd Hall run of 7 British Blue and Limousin cross cows aged 37 months to 87 months old sold to average 775kg, 256p, £1991 which topped at 845kg, 252.5p, £2133; 847kg, 251.5p, £2130; 790kg, 257.5p, £2034; 767kg, 257.5p, £1975; 726kg, 262.5p, £1905 and 719kg, 258.5p, £1858 for British Blue cows purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick (x5) and Owain Llyr.  Mr Garth, Peaks View sold the top priced Limousin cross cow for 810kg, 256.5p, £2077 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Teasdale & Sons, Halefield sold a Shorthorn cross cow for 928kg, 170.5p, £1582 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Pattinson, West End sold a Limousin cross cow for 942kg, 164.5p, £1549 also to Charles Kirkpatrick and 709kg, 194.5p, £1379 to Jewitt Meats.  Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe run of Limousin cows topped at 780kg, 196.5p, £1532 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning sold a Limousin cow for 695kg, 217.5p, £1511 to Owain Llyr.  Mr Andrew Kirkbride, Flimby Hall sold a British Blue cross cow for 598kg, 225.5p, £1348 to Owain Llyr and a Limousin cross cow from the same home sold for 617kg, 214.5p, £1323 to Jewitts.  Messrs Mosrop, Ryeclose sold Simmental cross cows to 680kg, 207.5p, £1411 to Sean McGimpsey.  Messrs Wilson & Son, Bowscale sold a Limousin cross cos for 602kg, 201.5p, £1213 to Jewitt Meats.

All classes of dairy cast cows would be as dearest seen for sometime with an overall average of 130.8p, up 4.2p on the week.  Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 913kg, 155.5p, £1419 to Sean McGimpsey.  Messrs Baird, Red Hall sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 819kg, 166.5p, £1363 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Moscrop, Ryeclose run of Friesian cows topped at 667kg, 195.5p, £1303 and 737kg, 173.5p, £1278 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Robert Capper.  Messrs Halliday, Broathill sold a Holstein cross heifer for 740kg, 175.5p, £1298 to David Holmes.  Brownrigg Hall Farms run of Holstein cross cows topped at 849kg, 150.5p, £1277 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Holliday, Newbampton Holstein cross heifers topped at 674kg, 186.5p, £1257 to Les Fell.  Messrs Elwen, Netherfield sold a Holstein cross heifer for 692kg, 179.5p, £1242 also to Les Fell.  Messrs Paul & Son, Greigsland sold a Holstein cross cow for 816kg, 148.5p, £1211 to Les Fell.  Messrs Horsley, Whitrigg Grange sold a Holstein cross cow for 821kg, 147.5p, £1210 also to Les Fell.

CAST BULLS: 10 stock bulls were on offer, Messrs Priestley, Cracrop sold a Limousin stock bull for 1002kg, 199.5p, £1998 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Tweddle, The Lee sold a Limousin stock bull for 1105kg, 147.5p, £1629 also to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Harrison & Sons, Peddar Hill sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus bull for 955kg, 169.5p, £1618 to Rob Medcalf.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 12th July Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which drew another marvellous entry of 2506 head.

1957 lambs saw a drop in numbers on the week, trade though if anything was slightly sharper, the average remained steady however fewer tup and export lambs were forward, to level at 260pph again putting Borderway at the top of the tree, this equates to £108.74 per head.

Michael Nicholson, The Lake, Blackford topped the days trading at £153 for a beautiful Beltex lamb which sold to Mr Robert Skelton on behalf of a retained butcher client.

Best end export types were as mentioned in short supply tup per kilo this week was 317.1p again for Beltex for RD & P Urwin, Hill House, Carlisle

Leading the consignments at £131.25 was M/s Mallinson, The Hill, Burgh by Sand. M/s Todd, Longhurst sold a run of 53 Texel lambs to a top of £144 to level at £130.94

M/s Crozier, Faugh Beeches topped the Suffolks at £141 with their run of Suffolk Mules levelling at £129.27          

The first Mules of the season were consigned by M/s Carruthers, Peel-a-Hill, Bewcastle they sold at 250pph or £107.50 a head

CAST SHEEP:  Another fantastic entry of 550 cast sheep where once again   power and flesh shone through selling to fantastic rates topping todays sale at £148 for a pen of 3 cracking Dutch Texel ewes from regular supporters M/s Wigham, Hargill House. Closely followed for 2 pure Texel ewes from M/s Harrison, Aimshaugh selling to £146. Strong fleshy ewes regularly selling to £120+.  Horned and leaner type ewes proving harder to sell, this trend being seen across the country with the influx of numbers coming forward.
