On Monday 19th July Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.  A good entry of 375 cast cows, bull and prime cattle, along with 2070 prime and cast sheep were on offer.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller entry of 76 Prime bulls forward with best quality bulls easier and plainer bulls very dear on the week.  Top overall was a super Limousin cross at £1629.87 from Messrs Jardine, The Yett, Lockerbie purchased by Les Fell.  Simmentals to £1459.64 from Messrs Gwynne, Castlewigg Farm, Newton Stewart.  Charolais to £1442.61 from Messrs Duff, The Laythes, Wigton.  Aberdeen Angus to £1421.65 from Messrs Fisher, Cleuchhead Farm, Hawick.  Black and whites peaked at £1423.74 for a Friesian from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Holsteins Friesians to £1242.85 from Messrs Armour, Milton Farm, Moffat.  Montbelaides to 207.5p from Messrs Workman, The Beeches, Carlisle and Friesians to 198.5 twice firstly by Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown and secondly by Messrs White, Steel Hall, Hexham.

PRIME CATTLE: A mixed show of 42 Prime steers and heifers forward resulting in a fantastic trade throughout.  The steers saw an average of £1706.51 for 22 and heifers £1550 for 20 sold.  Topping the sale was one from a run of four quality cattle from Messrs Blake, Halfwell Well, Penrith selling their Limousin cross heifer to £1880.08 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm to £1853.70 and £1871.35 and J J Crichton, Loughrigg Farm, Egremont to £1842.57.  An outstanding British Blue cross heifer from Messrs Harrington, Hoskethill Carlisle peaked at £1850.54.  This heifer was joint top pence per kilo of 265.5 along with Messrs Crichton, Loughriggs Limousin cross.

Steers saw a day’s top of £1847.31 for a British Blue cross from Messrs Murray, Prior House, Carlisle purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie to £1833.65 for another and purchased by Kurpas Meats.  Limousin cross steers saw a top of £1841.39 from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Others to £1826.34 from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg and Hundith House sold another to £1821.06.  Simmental crosses peaked at £1838.90 from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown and was again purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

CAST COWS:  A good entry of 251 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer, a plainer show was forward to the usual ringside of buyers, which resulted in better cows being sharper on the week.

Mr Parsons, Slealands sold a Limousin cross cow for 769kg, 241.5ppk or £1857 purchased by Mr David Holmes. Messrs Cowx & Son, Hudscales sold a Limousin cow for 836kg, 210.5ppk or £1459 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Lawson, Hundith House run of cows topped at 786kg, 199.5ppk or £1568 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Gwynne, Castlewigg Farm sold the top priced Simmental cow for 922kg, 167.5ppk or £1544 to Les Fell. Messrs Wilshaw, Oulton Hall run of Blonde cows topped at 795kg, 186.5ppk or £1482 and to 679kg, 217.5ppk or £1476 and 739kg, 191.5ppk or £1415 to Messrs Roberts, Owain Llyr and Michael Helliwell.

Maxwell Farming run of Aberdeen Angus cows topped at 829kg, 166.5ppk or £1380 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Watret, Burnside sold two young heifers for 204.5ppk (x2) both purchased by Jewitt.

A plainer show of dairy cows were on offer but buyers were keen for all classes. Messrs Morley, Petteril Bank sold a Holstein cross heifer for 710kg, 183.5ppk or1302 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Maxwell, North Doddington run of British Friesian cows topped at 818kg, 155.5ppk or £1271 and to 665kg, 175.5ppk or £1167 to Les Fell and Mr Roberts. Heifers sold to 592kg, 176.5ppk or £1044 also to Mr Roberts. Messrs Holliday, Newbampton Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 765kg, 161.5ppk or £1235 to Les Fell. Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 917kg, 133.5ppk or £1224 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Marshall, Hardgraves Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 848kg, 143.5ppk of £1216 to Mr McGimpsey. Messrs Henderson, Park House sold two Holstein cross cows for 785kg, 152.5ppk or £1197 and to 742kg, 157.5ppk or £1168 to Mr Kirkpatrick and Les Fell. Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall sold a Holstein cross heifer for 661kg, 178.5ppk or £1179 to Les Fell. Messrs Raven, Crookdake Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 802kg, 143.5ppk or £1150 to Les Fell. Messrs Hyslop, Meinside sold a Holstein cross heifer for 603kg, 182.5ppk or £1100 to Les Fell. CAST BULLS: Only 4 stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow selling a stock bull for 998kg, 179.5ppk or £1791 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Raven, Crookdake Hall sold an Aberdeen Angus stock bull to £1336kg, 128.5ppk or £1716 to Eric Hall. Messrs Hogg, Middle Brownrigg, sold a Limousin stock bull for 702kg, 186.5ppk or £1309 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: A great entry of 1900 prime sheep with trade continuing to exceed all expectations with a fantastic sale average of 265ppk or £112.50 per head. Once again sheep travelled far and wide with 95 vendors present and many more new vendors travelling from the east. Topping todays sale at £170 for a fantastic Dutch Texel lamb from Messrs Scott, Thirlwall Castle.

Topping the pence per kilo at 432.5ppk was a fantastic Beltex lamb from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg. Many of the best lambs selling to a top of £129 from Messrs Beard, Dormansteads. Pens of Mules sold to ease over 250ppk.

Weighty lambs continue to lead the way with 45kg lambs seeing fantastic returns, with over 42 pens selling to 200ppk plus, and 65 pens of lambs to over £130 plus
