Borderway Store and Weaned Cattle Sale

Harrison & Hetherington had an entry of 889 cattle at their weekly sale comprising of a catalogued entry of 338 Store Cattle, 100 Un-entered store bulls and weanlings, 251 Calves and 200 dairy cattle which included the Border and Lakeland Dairy sale and a production sale from Evening Holsteins from Thursby, Carlisle.

STORE CATTLE – At the weekly store sale an entry of 338 forward.  The beef trade continues to perform strongly, this grows increasing evident in the store ring, how many weeks can we say how dear they are?  This week Borderway ascertained new levels to said trade.  Bullocks sold to average an incredible £1215 with heifers at £1110 to see a sale average of £1170.   No fewer than 84 cattle sold at or above £1300 which accounts for 25% of the sale.  The sale topped at £1630 for a fantastic Limousin x bullock from Messrs Beattie, Ratlingate, Carlisle who also achieved the same price for a cracking heifer to see his run of 6 level at £1495.  Native cattle sold to £1600 for an Angus from Messrs Crichton, Rottington Hall, Egremont.   Dairy bred Blue cattle regularly sold at £1300 - £1400 to a top of £1500 from Messrs Beaty, Durdar Farm, Carlisle.

WEANED CATTLE : A much smaller show of weaned cattle were forward with a quieter ringside of buyers.  Stronger cattle were very easily sold but grazing cattle were a lot harder to cash due to shortage of grass.  Top price on the day was met twice, both from Messrs Knight, Stephney Farm, Seascale selling 2 Limousin bulls at £1290 with another west Cumbria vendor making the most of the buoyant bull trade, Messrs Palmer, Grange Farm, Flimby selling a Limousin bull at a very respectable £1200.  Stronger cattle were well sold with a great run of cattle from Messrs Cadzow topping both sections with a pen of 3 Simmental x heifers at £1105 and a pen of 4 bullocks selling for £1090.
