On Monday 26th July Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where a good entry of 375 Cast Cows, Prime Bulls and Prime Cattle were forward along with 2580 prime and cast sheep.
PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 82 Prime bulls forward at Borderways weekly sale whereby all classes were dearer on the week especially for the best fleshed and quality sorts. Top overall was an outstanding Limousin from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, Brampton achieving £2040.53 and purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton sold another to £1732.15. Charolais to £1711.71 from Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and a Bazadaise to £1638.27 from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown. Top overall pence per kilo of 252.5p was paid to Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton for their Limousin with their other two achieving 248.5p and 246.5p. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown aforementioned Bazadaise sold to 250.5ppk.
Dairy bred bulls to £1291.05 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown bought by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Friesians to £1281.55 from the same good home and Norwegian Reds to £1230.62 from Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton. Top pence per kilo of 209.5p was paid to Messrs Graham, Laws Hall for their Swedish Red & White and 202.5p for a Friesian for Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle both purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME CATTLE: A much larger entry of 43 prime steers and heifers forward resulting in a great trade throughout the sale, topping the sale overall was a Limousin cross steer weighing 796kgs and equated to £1866.62 at 234.5ppk; this bullock was purchased by W & E Fairlie, Letham and sold by first time vendors Messrs Millar, Woodhousehill, Lockerbie. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith peaked their run at £1804.33 and just behind at £1803.89 were vendors Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle, both were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top Charolais cross steer was one from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg Farm, Egremont achieving £1741.95 and was purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well sold top pence per kilo steer of 258.5p for an outstanding Limousin cross.
Heifers seen a days top of £1739.75 and £1690.59 for Limousin crosses from the Blake Family once again and were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Steven Wilson purchased a very smart Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Millar, Woodhousehill for £1494.90. British Blues from Messrs Skelton, Low House, Maryports run of cattle peaked at £1655.36 purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin. Charolais sold to £1490 for one from Messrs J Hunter, Bridge Mill, Wigton. Best heifers from Messrs Skeltons run of cattle peaked at 269.5p for a Limousin cross and was purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale, others to 261.5p from the same home and bought by Messrs Medcalf, Brockwood Abattoir, Halifax.

CAST COWS: A great entry of 255 Cast Cows and Stock Bulls was on offer on Monday with a great ringside of buyers ensuring a flying trade once again. Messrs Telfer & Son, Newton High House sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 887kg, 254.5p, £2257 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick; Messrs Chalmers & Co, Outer Woodhead sold the top price Simmental cow for 812kg, 185.5p, £1506 to Michael Helliwell; DA Harrison run of outstanding feed cows topped at 799kg, 184.5p, £1474 and 725kg, 199.5p, £1446 for Limousin crosses bought by David Holmes and Owain Llyr. Messrs Gate, Hollins Farm sold a Limousin cross cow for 844kg, 173.5p, £1464 to David Holmes; Messrs Wigham, Hargill House sold a Limousin cross cow for 764kg, 190.5p, £1455 to Owain Llyr; Messrs Beattie, Ratlinggate sold a Limousin cross cow 725kg, 198.5p, £1439 to Jewitt Meats. PRIME SHEEP: Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which drew another marvellous entry of 2580 head. 2358 prime lambs were forward and saw a rise in numbers although trade throughout had slightly lost the edge on the previous week. The average throughout, with a large number of heavier lambs, levelled up at 257ppk, equating to £108.51, falling in line with the trade two weeks previous.
Messrs Armstrong, Shadwick Cottage topped the days trading at £147 selling to Mr Robert Skelton on behalf of a retained client. Best types of export lambs once again sold very well seeing the top pence per kilo of the day being a pen of Beltex lambs from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands, Roweltown topping at 325ppk.
Leading consignment was from Messrs Bell, Halbankgate with a tremendous run of Beltex lambs averaging up at £127.58.

CAST SHEEP: On Monday 26th July Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast ewes where strong ewes remain a very good trade with a lack of numbers nationally. Topping todays sale at £147 was 2 cracking Dutch Texel ewes from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House. Mule ewes also remain a strong trade with big ewes easily in excess of £100 and to a top of £113 from Messrs Nicholson, Applegarth. Many more can be sold weekly.
