On Monday 9th August Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller entry of 62 prime bulls meeting a flyer of a trade once again for all classes forward.  Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton, Annan achieving a days top of £1859.55 and was purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale.  Beef Shorthorns sold to £1724.09 from Messrs Thompson, Farlam Hill, Brampton and purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Top overall pence per kilo of 248.5p and 247.5p was attained by Cliffe Farm, Cumbria purchased by A & D Meats and Bowland Foods, Preston.

Black and white dairy bulls remained an excellent trade with a days top of £1321.89 for a Fleckvieh from Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Alby Field purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor, Holstein Friesians sold to £1280.43 from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick, Fleckviehs from Alby Field sold to 209.5p, 208.5p and 205.5p and Friesians to 197.5p from Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End, Penrith.

PRIME CATTLE: Yet another very small entry of 28 prime steers and heifers forward resulting in an outstanding trade throughout with everything selling off the clock!  Top overall was one from a weekly run of cattle from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith who sold a Limousin cross steer to £1901.12 and was purchased by weekly purchasers Pioneer Foods, Carlisle, Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths to £1848.94 for another.  First time vendors Messrs Harrison, Aldermanseat, Gretna were well rewarded with their Charolais cross selling to £1875.01 and a Beef Shorthorn to £1846; both purchased by Pioneer Foods.

Top pence per kilo steer of 256.5p and 255.5p was paid to Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle with the first bought by Pioneer Foods and the second by WE Fairlie, Letham.  Messrs Blake, Halfway Well also attained 255.5p.  British Blues sold to 248.5p from Messrs Nicholson, Lake, Carlisle.

Heifers were also a flyer of a trade with a days top of £1761.18 achieved by Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan with their Simmental, this was purchased by Eric Hall; next best was a Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well receiving £1638.27 and purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Carlisle.  Messrs Lawson, Stubbsgill, Workington peaked at £1572.63 for their run of heifers, this was purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin; Messrs Lawsons run of heifers averaged 586kgs and £1515 per head, included in these was joint top overall pence per kilo of 273.5p and secondly by Halfway Well for Limousin crosses.  Messrs Story, Newbiggin sold to 271.5p for another bought by A & D Meats, Rossendale.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 9th August Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Prime sheep, numbers continue to be slow coming forward with 1869 head forward.  Trade was sharper on the week to level at 241.7p, 242.16p SQQ, which comes to £106.18 per head.  35 pens of lambs (101 lambs) sold over £130 per head and 37 lots over 280ppk.  Topping the sale at £158 was an exceptional Dutch Texel lamb shown by T & K Harrison, Lesson Hall, Wigton which sold to Tony Harrison for his butchers shop, Main Street, Cockermouth; Trevor and Kevin sold 16 lambs to average £133.63.  Topping per kilo at 378.4p was a tremendous Beltex lamb from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands, Roweltown; weighing in at 37kg it sold to £140 to D Griffiths.  Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton lead the consignment averages selling 7 lambs to level at £137.86 to a top of £142.  Suffolks sold to £134 for heavies from Messrs Fell, Harley Croft, Wigton.  John and George Browell lead the charge of a long line of trailers from Northumberland selling a marvellous run of 41 Texel lambs to level at £132.16; another John Reay, St Oswalds sold to £150 for a pair with others to £138.

CAST SHEEP: The weekly sale of 210 saw trade top at £158 from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm for an outstanding Texel ewe. All sheep sold extremely well. Mules continue to fly selling to a top of £101 for a pen of 6. Jacob ewe sold to a top of £92.
