On Monday 16th August Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A larger entry of 94 prime bulls forward selling away at a tremendous trade throughout for all classes with the very best selling to £2004 for an outstanding Limousin cross from Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill, Workington and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston; Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold another to £1924.04 and again bought by Bowland Foods.  British Blue crosses from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton peaked at £1809.34 and Charolais crosses from Messrs McClanachan, Millhill, Lockerbie to £1607.82 bought by A & D Meats, Rosendale.  Top overall pence per kilo of 253.5p and 250.5p was again attained by Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford and Bowland Foods.

Dairy bred bulls very easily sold with more flesh forward on the week, these sold to a days top of £1426.10 for a Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie purchased by Jewitt Meats and £1411.02 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Robinson, Burtholme, Brampton again purchased by Jewitt Meats.  Top pence per kilo of 197.5p was attained twice, firstly by Messrs Clark, Whins and secondly by Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End, Penrith, both for Friesians.

PRIME CATTLE: A small entry of only 30 prime steers and heifers forward whereby many more could have been sold to vendors advantage with 11 selling over the £1700 mark to a top of £1904.32 for a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle; another from the same home to £1868.63 and £1858.78 from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton with Messrs Blake, Halfway Wells best achieving £1846.35.  Top pence per kilo steer of 270.5p was for the aforementioned Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown.

Heifers saw a days top of £1756.56 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle and purchased by Stephen Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill, Carlisle; Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold to £1724.54 and purchased by Pioneer Foods with Charolais crosses from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby to £1718.43, the same vendors also sold the days top overall pence per kilo of 287.5p with this Limousin cross heifer being purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle.  Six heifers sold to over 270.5p, a real shortage of clean cattle evident once again.

CAST COWS: A larger entry of 334 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to a good ringside of buyers which ensured a great trade at Borderway again.  Mr Harry Emslie, Brae of Coynach, Peterhead run of outstanding cows topped at 806kg, 237.5p, £1914 for a Limousin cow and 820kg, 202.5p, £1660 for a Charolais cow and other young Limousin cows from the same home selling for 244.5p, 237.5p, 236.5p, 224.5p, 223.5p all purchased by Owain Llyr.  Mr Chall Parsons, Slealands, Longtown sold a Limousin cow for 773kg, 192.5p, £1488 and a British Blue cow for 722kg, 199.5p, £1440 bought by Michael Helliwell and Owain Llyr.  Messrs Close & Son, Fishwick Mains sold a Longhorn cow for 998kg, 148.5p, £1482 to Sean McGimpsey; Messrs Johnston, Westray sold a British Blue cow for 819kg, 172.5p, £1412 also to Sean McGimpsey; DA Harrison & Co, Hill House run of cows topped at 717kg, 195.5p, £1401 bought for Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Palmer, Grange Farm sold a Limousin cross cow for 606kg, 217.5p, £1318 to Owain Llyr; Maxwell Farming sold Aberdeen Angus cross heifers for 215.5p and 203.5p twice.

A plain show of dairy cast cows was on offer with extra buyers coming to take advantage of the great numbers at Borderway, Mr Colin Horsley, Whitrigg Grange sold a Holstein cross cow for 934kg, 158.5p, £1480 purchased by David Holmes; Messrs Robinson, Burtholme sold a Holstein cross cow for 905kg, 148.5p, £1343 bought by Thomas Fell; Messrs Story, Blackrigg sold a Holstein cross cow for 870kg, 150.5p, £1309 to Messrs Roberts of Wales.  Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall sold a Holstein cross heifer for 871kg, 149.5p, £1302 to David Holmes; Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown sold a Holstein cross heifer for 768kg, 169.5p, £1301 to Robert Capper; Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank sold Friesian heifers for 194.5p and 183.5p bought by Rob Medcalf and David Holmes; Messrs Spedding, Stone Flatts sold Holstein cross heifers for 180.5p and 176.5p bought by Sean McGimpsey and David Holmes.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 16th August 2021 Harrison & Hetherington held the weekly sale of prime sheep which saw a much larger entry of 3068 head forward.  Trade rose slightly on the week to level at 244ppk or £106.07 per head.

A real variety of lambs were forward allowing all orders to be well catered for, new vendors and ones returning after a number of years were in attendance and all were elated with their returns.  The sale topped at a magnificent £188 for a single Beltex lamb from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton.

Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Wigton, who made a return to Borderway for the first time in five years, lead the charge per kilo selling fabulous 40kg Beltex lambs at £160 or 400ppk.  Another vendor who has found his way back to Borderway this season is Messrs Benson, Swallows Barn, Wigton who sold Texels to £160 a head.

More lambs required next week with a new buyer expected to be in attendance.

CAST SHEEP: Good strong ewes selling with ease.  Rams also sold to fantastic rates selling to £120 plus and topping at £138.  Swaledales were also in good demand selling to a top of £80 from Messrs Smith, Roachburn.  Feeding ewes were greatly received with a good show of buyers forward for feeding types
