On Monday 23rd August Harrison & Hetherington held their Anniversary Prize shows and sales of primestock. A good entry of 435 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were on offer.

PRIME BULLS: A fantastic trade for the 81 prime bulls forward not only for the best fleshed but the plainer types too.  Topping the sale was the 3rd prize bull, a British Blue from Seymour Farm, Wigton attaining £1982.09 and was purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax, next wat £1935.10 was the 2nd prize bull from Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill, Workington purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie, Maianjou from Messrs Houldey, Kirkleton House, Lockerbie to £1659.04 bought by Jewitt Meats and Charolais from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Dumfries to £1611.13 and purchased by A & O Meats.  Top overall price per kilo was the aforementioned Willie Lawson, Stubsgill peaking at 261.5ppk; other Limousin bred cattle to 257.5ppk and 255.5ppk for Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan both purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butcher, Bradford.

Dairy bred bulls sold to £1321.57 for a Norwegian Red from Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton and was purchased by Bowland Foods.  Holstein Friesians to £1233,59 for Messrs Walker, Barwinnock Farm, Newton Stewart again purchased by Bowland Foods.  Messrs Little, Kirkbride House Norwegian topped price per kilo at 213.5 followed by 207.5 twice, firstly for a Swedish Red from Messrs Graham, Law Hall, Longtown and secondly by Messrs Maddocks, Aulby Farm, Penrith for a Friesian.  Many more bulls could have been sold to vendors advantage!

PRIME CATTLE: An increased entry of 44 prime steers and heifers forward selling at one of the dearest trades seen for a long time.  Over 23 animals sold in excess of £1700 to a top of £2170.80 for the third prized 720kg heifer from a delighted Mr Jack Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton another was a Limousin cross heifer for vendors Messrs Telford & Son, Edenlin, Carlisle selling their second prized heifer to £2023.35 both of these purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Critchton, Loughrigg top Limousin heifer was £1993.48 and was purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butcher, Great Orton, Carlisle and £1955.74 for Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith purchased by Frasers Butchers, Hanover Street, Stranraer. British Blue crosses sold to £1972.75 for the 1st prize and reserve overall champion from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg purchased by the judge Michael Harrison on behalf of RJ Harrison & Sons, King Street Butchers, Wigton. Top overall pence per kilo was again a heifer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg who achieved 329.5pph and was purchased by R & JP Mullholland Butchers. Messrs Greenhill, Wigton sold their best to 321.5p for a 545kg Limousin cross and was purchased by Frasers Butchers Shop, Stranraer.

Steers saw a day’s top of £1943.66 for the 2nd prize steer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Lawson, Hundith presented the days overall champion which later sold to £1893.48 and was purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Story, Newbiggin sold top priced British Blue cross to £1844.24 and was purchased by WE Fairlie, Letham. Best price per kilo of 261.5p was from Colin Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport for a superb Limousin cross and was purchased by Pioneer Foods the same vendors sold another to 260.5p and was purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir.

CAST COWS: Once again a great entry of 314 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer with trade bring very good for all classes again. Jean Mackay, Harelaw Farm, Glasgow sold two outstanding British Blue cows for 844kg at 219.5p totalling £1852 and 669kg at 23.05p totalling £1542 both purchased by Owain Llyr. Mr Hamish Goldie, South Bowerhouses sold an outstanding Charolais cow for 1037kg at 177.5p totalling £1840 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Vance, Low Skeog sold a Charolais cow for 1080kg at 164.5p totalling £1776 also to Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr Iain Graham, Rose Castle Farm sold the top priced Limousin cow for 769kg at 215.5p totalling £1657 and 779kg at 212.5p totalling £1655 purchased by Owain Llyr and Jewitt Meats. Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House sold a Maine Anjou cow for 852kg at 184.5p totalling £1571 purchased by Messrs Roberts, Wales. DA Harrison & Co, Hill House Farm’s run of cows topping at 767kg at 203.5p to £1560 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Lawson, Hundith House sold a Limousin x cow for 729kg at 200.5p totalling £1461 to Jewitt’s Meats. Messrs Thirwall, Quarry Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 563kg at 215.5p totalling £1213 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning Farm sold two Limousin cows for 641kg at 214.5p totalling £1374 and 663kg at 213.5p totalling £1415 bought by Owain Llyr and Jewitts. Messrs Edmondson, Seathwaite Farm sold a Limousin cow for 558kg at 211.5p totalling £1180 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Little, The Guards sold a Limousin cow for 656kg at 205.5p totalling £1348 to Jewitts.

A plain show of dairy cast cows was on offer with all classes in great demand. Messrs Dart, Flotherssold the top priced Montbelairde x cow for 858kga t 164.5p totalling £1411 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Harrison, Dundraw Farm sold a Fleckvieh x cow for 755kg at 173.5p totalling £1309 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Carruthers, Glenrigg Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 916kg at 138.5p totalling £1268 to Les Fell. Messrs Robinson & Son, West Cocklaw sold a Holstein x cow for 823kg at 153.5p totalling £1263 to Steven Bowes. Messrs Graves, Old Town Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 913kg at 137.5p totalling £1255 to Sean McGimpsey. CAST BULLS: 9 stock bulls were on offer. Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton Farm sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1181kg at 169.5p totalling £2001 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Fish, Crossrigg Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 948kg at 185.5p totalling £1754 to Rob Medcalf.

PRIME SHEEP:

On Monday 23rd August Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which saw 2542 head forward.

The anniversary show was kindly judged by Mr David Griffiths, Ellesmere who gave his 1st prize pen of 5 Beltex lambs the Championship, these were shown by the Skelton family, Low House, Dearham, they sold at £170 to Mr R Skelton on behalf of a retained butcher client. Standing in reserve was the 2nd prize pen of 5 Beltex for Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, Coanwood they sold at £148 to Tony Harrison, Main Street, Cockermouth. 1st prize single was consigned by Messrs Fell, Chapel Farm, Bassenthwaite who made a return to Borderway after years, it sold at £150 to Mr Morgan Helliwell. Out with the show a flying trade was witnessed with a sale average of 253.08ppk SQQ 255.89 seeing an average per head of £110.67 to give a comparative to other outlets the top 953 lambs averaged £120.54!

CAST SHEEP: 205 cast ewes were forward where trade was flying.  Topping todays sale at £190 for a strong Texel ram from Messrs Hartley, Row Brow Park.  Ewes topped at £165 for a cracking Beltex ewe from Messrs Mounsey, Ashfield selling for £165.  Meaty Swaledales continued to sell well up to £80 for 3 from Messrs Moore, Highside.  Ewes continue to be very well bed for with a growing ringside of buyers weekly
