Harrison & Hetherington Director Laura Millar, looks forward to the coming Borderway Agri Expo she is helping to organise, and back over the month of booming sales leading up to this world class celebration of the UK livestock industry:
“As we gear up for this year’s Borderway Agri Expo I can’t help but take a step back and pause for moment in awe of what our exceptional farmers do every single day of the year. In rain and sunshine, they produce world class animals year after year and Borderway Agri Expo is the perfect vessel to showcase this. It brings together the farming community to meet and compete and reaffirm that what they do is remarkable.
At every sale we hold, we’re reminded of how good our livestock farmers are at their job and our recent Autumn sales have shown the strength of their performance in the face of the most challenging climatic and economic conditions.
Despite this year’s awful weather, strong dairy sales over the last month have included a huge and successful sale of 535 head in Borderway topping at £3000 for milkers, £1950 for in-calf heifers and £1700 for maidens.
The annual Alston Moor sale saw 14,000 mules go under the hammer with an overall average £154.97 up £24.32 on the year and the highly anticipated Kelso Ram sale also showed averages across all breeds up considerably on 2023.
In our recent online pedigree sales, the renowned Irish Charolais herd Loughriscouse topped their production sale with Loughriscouse Tannisha making £7,100, and Cherryvalley Beef Shorthorns sets a new Northern Irish Breed record of £13,300 for Cherryvalley Thriving.
The strength and depth of our farmers’ commitment to their industry and their communities has been in evidence at our machinery sales this month and we hosted five successful online sales in September. The Dispersal of Vintage machinery and equipment for David F Paton at Moffat saw a packed yard on a rare hot sunny day, followed by a highly successful Dispersal Sale on behalf of Messrs Bunting, Midtown, which raised £3,824.25 for ‘Sams Lab’, a charity supporting underprivileged children with new and upgraded software to ensure them a better education and the best start in life in memory of the Bunting’s late daughter Sam.
Looking ahead, we have a number of sales on the books including a collective sale of machinery and small tool at Lockerbie Mart on 24th, a Dispersal sale of machinery on behalf of Messrs Stirling, Lockerbie on the 25th, and a Dispersal sale of machinery on farm on behalf of Messrs Horn, Penrith on Saturday 26th October.
In a world where there is constantly mounting pressure on farmers to remain sustainable, carbon neutral, socially active and still make time for their families, Borderway Agri Expo offers an outlet for likeminded folk to come together, celebrate their achievements and successes, share their experience and concerns, and discover how the latest products and services can help them do an even better job in the future.
As with previous years, there is a packed schedule with the hotly contested commercial cattle and sheep classes, the coveted pedigree championships, and opportunities for the next generation of livestock farmers and breeders to show their skills and dedication. With an extensive tradeshow of over 120 stands showcasing the latest in innovation and new technology, there is something for everyone.
Borderway Agri Expo was set up 16 years ago with one objective – to celebrate Great British livestock, and the farmers and families who breed, produce and show their wonderful world class sheep and cattle. That is exactly what we intend to do on Friday 1st November hereat Borderway, and we look forward very much to seeing you there.
