Live Ring Trade Remains Strong at H&H Kirkby Stephen

Despite some changing pressures within the wider marketplace, here at H&H Kirkby Stephen, trade across both cattle and sheep continues to demonstrate the resilience and strength of the live ring.

Recent store cattle sales have seen strong numbers coming forward and a very competitive trade throughout. At one of our latest sales, we saw an increased year-on-year entries, with buyers travelling from far and wide looking to secure quality cattle. highlighting the continued demand for top-end continental cattle, the sale was topped by an outstanding 11-month-old Limousin-cross steer with real show potential which sold for £3,500.

Good quality suckler-bred steers and heifers between eight and twelve months old continue to sell exceptionally well, with stronger sorts regularly exceeding £2,000 per head. Heifers with breeding potential were also highly sought after, with buyers showing confidence in future breeding and store cattle demand. Despite the wider market conditions dairy-bred cattle also continue to trade well, with Holstein Friesian steers reaching over £2,000 at recent sales.

While store cattle remain a strong trade, the prime cattle sector has seen some adjustment in recent weeks. Deadweight prices have eased significantly from the highs seen last year, with values around £1/kg behind peak levels. Naturally, this has impacted finishing margins and placed some pressure on confidence within the prime sector.

Part of this softer trade is being influenced by increased volumes of imported beef entering the market through some of the larger processors, which inevitably affects the home trade. However, it is important to recognise the continued support from wholesalers, butchers and buyers who remain committed to sourcing British cattle through the live ring. Their ongoing commitment plays a vital role in supporting British farmers and maintaining competition within the marketplace.

Despite fluctuations in the finished trade, store cattle are still achieving strong prices, largely due to simple supply and demand. National cattle numbers continue to tighten year on year, meaning finishers and feeders are having to compete hard at auction marts to secure stock. This competition is helping maintain a buoyant trade for vendors bringing quality cattle forward.

On the sheep side, trade has also stepped up significantly in recent weeks, with all classes seeing sharper demand. Prime hoggs have been especially strong, with recent sales producing excellent averages and a noticeably improved ringside trade. Export-weight hoggs continue to attract keen buyer interest, while heavy commercial sheep have also seen a lift in demand, regularly achieving impressive returns.

Hill-bred sheep, including Blackface, Swaledale and Cheviot hoggs, have seen a particularly good trade, with good meated types attracting significant attention from buyers supplying all outlets. Medium weight hoggs have also sharpened considerably, reflecting the confidence and demand currently within the export trade.

Spring lambs have similarly experienced an uplift, with a broader range of buyers operating around the ring and helping drive competition. Smart bred handy weigh and stronger commercial lambs continue to attract excellent returns, and confidence across the sheep sector appears positive heading into the coming weeks.

Demand is expected to remain firm for all classes of spring lambs, prime hoggs and cast ewes in the short term, particularly with buyers looking to secure numbers ahead of seasonal demand later in the month. Several consignors have commented that their hogg averages are running £40 to £50 per head ahead of the same period last year, which demonstrates just how competitive the live trade has become.

As always, the live ring continues to prove its value by creating genuine competition and delivering strong returns for producers. In uncertain market conditions, transparency and competitive bidding remain more important than ever, ensuring farmers receive the best possible value for their stock.

Here at H&H Kirkby Stephen, we would like to thank all vendors, purchasers and supporters who continue to back our weekly sales. The continued support from both local and travelling buyers and sellers is essential in maintaining a vibrant and competitive marketplace.

With tighter livestock numbers, continued buyer demand and confidence in quality stock, we remain optimistic for the weeks ahead and look forward to welcoming customers to our upcoming sales.

And as we always say – keep Britain farming, sell live and thrive.
