Carlisle Rare & Minority Breeds Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

The Annual Rare & Minority Breeds Sale held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle last Saturday was buzzing from early in the morning and continued throughout the day.  Trade throughout for all classes in all sections was in strong demand and saw some new records achieved.

Cattle

In the cattle ring, it was the Longhorn breed which secured the leading top 2 prices of the day.  The first at £1900 was for a cow and calf outfit shown by Stephen Horrocks of Lancaster.  The January 2018 born cow, Gale Farm Skye along with her January born bull calf Gale Farm Vermentry, was sold to Messrs Laird, Kirkcaldy, Fife.

Messrs Laird also bought the next best price Longhorn at £1380, this was Benchill Qatar a 2016 born cow with her heifer calf at foot Benchil Vy consigned by Mrs Charlotte Willis.

In the Dexter section the 1st prize bull and Overall Champion Planetree Mercury from Messrs Darnbrook sold for the top price of £1000 and was purchased by Reive Farm Ltd, Biggar.

Sheep

Kerry Hills

Topping the sale at £2800 was a 3-year-old ram presented by Mr M Ellis. He was a Marlbrook ram bred by Mr J Croose and has gone to join Mr S Lanes flock in Powys, Wales. The ram won his class in the pre -sale show.

The Overall Champion had the second top price presented by the Top Spot flock of Mrs A Burgess with a ewe lamb reaching £1600, which was purchased by Ms MacGill who has the Coull flock from the Isle of Islay.

A ram lamb from Mr M Ellis reached £1500, purchased by P Hambleton from Ashbourne for his Clayfield flock. Male Champion, Miss ER Wards ram lamb made £1000 and received the trophy for Best Opposite.

Topping the yearling rams was a ram from Mrs L Steen which reached £1100, and went to a new breeder in Lanarkshire, closely followed by a ram from Mr J Graham which reached £1000 and he was another with a new home on the Isle of Islay with Ms MacGill.

The top price yearling ewe, and overall Reserve Champion, at £900, went to a new breeder from Chelthenham and was presented by Mr G Pugh. These were closely followed by yearling ewes from Mrs A Burgess and Mr Wighams who gained bids of £800 for theirs, going to Mr M Nolan in Devon and Mr J Croose, Leominster.

Ryelands
Heading up the Ryelands on offer at £850 was a white colour shearling ram, Wellhead Archie shown by Mr David Mitchell, New Cumnock, Ayrshire.  This was the first shearling ram to go through the ring and he was purchased by Messrs Wilson from Penrith.

At £800 was a coloured ram lamb, Allerdale Bertie Bassett, from AJ & EJ Robinson.  This son of Night Star X-Factor won 1st prize in his class and Male Champion in the pre-sale show.

The best of the Ryeland females was a coloured shearling ewe from Michelle Vermen’s Snelson flock. This gimmer has won 1st prize in her class, Female Champion and also 1st prize Wool on the Hoof in the pre-sale show. She went on to sell for £650 to Roman Castle Agricultural from Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

Shetlands

Another popular breed on sale was the Shetlands, holding their National Show at Carlisle again this year, a good turnout of sheep and breeders prevailed to enjoy the buoyant trade on the day.  Taking the top price at £420 was a ewe lamb from Messrs B & J Watson, this lamb, Muncaster Litzy, was sired by Southbrook Monty and was purchased by Messrs Darke from Caithness.  

At £300 was another ewe lamb, Westerheugh Fawn, consigned by A Cowan. This daughter of Broadwath Klive was knocked down to Messrs Laverick from Catterick, North Yorkshire.

Two Shetlands sold for £240, the first of these was a shearling ram from Dr J Hunter, Hunters Elof who was purchased by Messrs Carradice, Tebay, Penrith. At the same money was the ram lamb, Broadwath Bentley from H & A Greenfield who was off to Irvine, Ayrshire with Messrs Russell.

The Champion Coloured Shetland Todhill Foula, who was also 5th placed shearling ewe, sold with her twin sister Todhill Fetlar to new members for £220 each, top priced shearling ewes.

Any other Sheep

Other sheep breeds sold well included two Valais Blacknose ewe lambs selling for £2400 and £2200 both of these were consigned by Elizabeth Miller and purchased by Messrs Jones from Wrexham.

Hungarian Screw Horns sold to a top of £1500 and £1200 for ewe lambs from Miss B Chapman also bought by Messrs Jones from Wrexham.

Border Leicester’s sold to £750 for a shearling gimmer from Caitlyn Carruthers. This gimmer, sired by Intock Formula One, was purchased by Messrs Radford from Barnard Castle. Mary Laidlaw sold a shearling ram for £700 to Messrs Irving from Wigton.

Goats

The popular Pigmy breed attracted great numbers and interest and saw the section top at £850 and three lots selling for £700 all consigned by Hazel Murray from Kirkbean, Dumfries.

Poultry & Waterfowl

A breeding pair of white call ducks consigned by Messrs Ryan of Co Down, Northern Ireland, sold for the world record price of £2000. Messrs Ryan also sold another pair at £1400.

Geese sold to a top of £400 for a pair of Grey Toulouse from Messrs Soper from Devon. 3 white Pekin females also sold for £400 from Messrs Kay, Retford.

Topping the large fowl section was a trio of Gold Brahamas and 3 Blue Orpingtons, these lots both sold for £300.
