DOORMAN TILLY TOPS AT 7,000GNS
Following the closer earlier this year of the Newton Rigg College and the subsequent sale of Sewborwens Farm the new owners had to make the difficult decision to disperse the entire dairy herd. The herd had been established in 2014 when a new state of the art dairy complex was completed at Sewborwens Farm and best possible genetics were selected from the Warnelview, Holmland and Tallent Holstein herds creating a solid foundation, based on proven cow families.
Trade topped at 7,000gns for a super attractive six-year-old Doorman daughter and milking heifers topped at 3,000gns for a Stantons Chief daughter with heifer calves selling to a top of 5,600gns. Buyers from all the five home nations were recorded om the buyers list and once again the importance on the online bidding platform was very evident with just over a third of the sale purchased online.
The importance of strong cow families was clear to see in all the high sellers and Newtonrigg Doorman Tilly was no exception selling for 7,000gns to Fluscopike Farms near Penrith. She was milking in her fourth lactation and had recently classified Excellent completing twelve generations of Excellent or Very Good animals. Many super lines of this prolific cow family have been successful over the years and include the Condon Aero Sharon the dam of Picston Shottle. Her June born Jagger Mick daughter sold for 1,500gns.
Milking heifers were in demand and topped at 3,000gns for Lillyhall Chief Elegant who now joins the herd of Mr Brown from Catrig Farm in Ayrshire. This impressive young animal had been purchased in the Black & White Sale in 2019 as a young calf and had classified Good Plus 80 earlier in her lactation. She displayed all the potential to develop into an Excellent cow in the future just has the pervious ten generations had done. The full sister to the grand dam in this pedigree sold for 4,800gns to the Carldanton Herd back in 2016 during the Border & Lakeland monthly sale. Her April born daughter by Rubels Red sold for 1,100gns to Mr Martin from Carlisle.
In Calf heifers remain excellent value for money and they topped at 1,850gns for Newtownrigg Duty Bunty going to Baltier Farms near Newton Stewart. She was sired by Westcoast Athabaska and bred from two Excellent cows from the Warnelview Bunty cow family both with impressive butterfat records. This heifer was due in September to the beef sire.
Many of the well bred calves and yearling heifers were in strong demand especially those with unbroken generations of dams with Excellent or Very Good classifications. Selling for 5,600gns was Newtonrigg Lambda Ambrosia who was purchased by the Katal Holstein herd in Derbyshire. She was sired by Delta Lambda and bred from a show winning dam by Flagship. Her third dam is the Former #1 Type Uno daughter in the breed and her fifth dam, Smiddiehill Toystory Ambrosia sold for 27,000gns in the Smiddiehill Sale.
