ESPLAND TOPS WITH CRACKSHOT CHAMPION
The October Border & Lakeland sale attracted another wonderful group of well bred Holstein cattle all producing large volumes of milk from many of the top breeders in the North of England and Scotland. Trade topped at 2,700gns twice with the milking heifers averaging £1790 with 19 animals selling for or more than £2000. Trade was slightly up on the month but remains cautious as producers face continuing cost increases.
The sale included the Wormanby Youngstock sale that topped at 3,200gns on two occasions to average £1580 for a special group of heifers.
Dugdale Nutrition sponsored the show and Paul Stubbs from the Whitgreave Holstein herd in Stafford judged the classes. The Overall Champion went to Espland Crackshot Betsy who was part of the Espland dispersal sale of the Cannon family from near Appleby. This is the third month in a row Espland have been Champion and the second consecutive month a daughter of Sandy-Valley Crackshot has been named Champion. Espland Crackshot Betsy had a perfect rump and outstanding frame with a super attractive udder and sold for 2,700gns to the judge. Fourteen cows and heifers sold from the Espland herd to average almost £1900, including Espland Crackshot Alison who sold for 2,300gns to Mr Royal in Cheshire.
The Reserve Champion went to the winning cow in milk Atomic Superstar Snowdrift who was part of the Keith Willimson’s dispersal sale. She was a silky hided cow sired by Sahara Superstar and bred from the Snowdrift cow family that topped the Mossrigg dispersal sale for the Fisher family. She was bred from five generations of Excellent or Very Good cows and sold for 2,000gns to the Woodcatt Holstein herd.
The Berryholme Holstein herd owned by the Wright family from Kendal sold three heifers to average £2590 and topped at 2,700gns for Berryholme Crushtime Maud who was purchased by the Templeton family from Knowe Farm in Ayrshire. She was bred from three Excellent dams with her grand dam and third dam scoring EX94 and EX93 respectively.
Stardale Archangel Millie was consigned by the Burrow family from Lancashire. She was sired by Archangel and bred from eight generations of Excellent or Very Good cows with the first six all Excellent going back to a 100-ton Joylan Royal Flush cow and sold for 2,100gns to Mr Talbot from Preston. Another six heifers from this home sold to average £1916.
