Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen mart held their annual prize NEMSA show and sale of Gimmer Lambs on Friday 9th September, where a catalogued entry of 9252 lambs were on offer.
The sale set off with a flying start with the first pen in the ring selling for £600 being the champion pen which received the late C Jackson Perpetual Cup for 10 lambs shown by the Brown Family Asby Hall, and which were successfully purchased by regular customer James Robinson, Carnforth.
The overall reserve pen and receiving the H&H Perpetual Trophy was Messrs Hutchinson, Redgate with the pen selling for £300 and were bought by John Gate, Northwich.
Great thanks and appreciation goes to our show judges, Miss Emily Pearse, Crediton, Mr Chris Hewitt, Lancaster and our referee Mr Thomas Hird, Cockermouth, who’s knowledge and expertise we are grateful for.
Lambs on a whole were said to be smaller than usual and with torrential rain the previous evening and sale morning not doing lambs any favours, nevertheless an overall sale average of £119.29 (down £6.01) was achieved which was a wonderful outcome when taking into account the extreme drought like conditions and lack of grass in many areas of the country where Mule Gimmer Lambs are bought to go from the North of England.
10 pens sold between £230-£600
40 pens sold between £150-£600
Strong pens of well grown tupping lambs were in strong demand with buyers prepared to give premiums for good pens with these regularly selling between £160-£180, and £130-£150 regardless of colour.
Messrs Brown Asby Hall sold a pen of 20 strong lambs to £240, with this same home selling another pen of 20 lambs to £175.
The consignment of 430 lambs from this home, first through the ring and sold to average a wonderful £140.33
Messrs Dent, Greenriggs sold their run of 172 lambs to average a fantastic £148.17, Topping at £250 and £240.
Messrs Hutchinson, Redgate topped their run at £300, with this run of lambs averaging an excellent £144.48 for 255.
Messrs Hayton, Asby Grange topped their consignment at £300 for a pen of 10 lambs, with another pen selling for £250 also from this home.
Messrs Taylor Swathburn also took the prize for best run of lambs in the sale which was kindly judged by Kevin Wilson, Skipton.
Credit must go to all our consigners who strive to breed top quality North of England Mule Gimmer Lambs which are fit to travel and perform anywhere in the country!
A massive thanks goes out to all our buyers both local, and who travel the length and breadth of the country to Kirkby Stephen to source quality lambs, and to which we really are
appreciative to. We also thank and commend all our staff involved with the sale who all play a part by working as a team to make the sale such a success.
