Kirkby Stephen NEMSA Lamb Sale

Kirkby Stephen, Faraday Road, Kirkby Stephen, CA17 4QL

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen mart held their annual prize NEMSA show and sale of Gimmer Lambs on Friday 8th September, where a catalogued entry of 9944 lambs were on offer.

The sale topped at £480 for the second prize pen of large breeders from Messrs Hutchinson, Redgate, Rookby, Kirkby Stephen and were purchased by John Gate, Northwich.

The overall champion and receiving the late C Jackson Perpetual Cup was awarded to Messrs Brown, Asby Hall, Great Asby selling for £340 to Messrs Robinson, Carnforth.

The overall championship and receiving the H&H Perpetual trophy was awarded to the first prize small breeders from Messrs Stephenson, The Gables and sold for £220 to Messrs Batty, Heversham.

The Thursday evening show saw one of the largest turnouts seen for a number of years with several new faces showing. With our judging being carried out by Mr D Branson, Towchester; Mr T Hird, Cockermouth with Mr R Graves, High Hesket carry referee duties.

The silver cup donated by Peter Pratt was awarded to Messrs Hayton, Asby Grange, Great Asby for the best run of 60 or more lambs was judged by John Pedley, Oaktree Farm.

Averaged £121.70 (up £2.79) for 607 more lambs sold on the year. Strongest tupping lambs were in short supply with lambs noted as been on a whole smaller on the year right through, this resulted in the good nice bred tupping lambs regularly selling in excess of £140 with the strongest selling in excess of £160 and being well up on the year.

The consignment from first time vendors Kilnstown Farms, Roweltown of 554 strong lambs sold to average £142.53.

Pens of well bred and bonny/dark headed runners were sort after and were also up on the year, with lighter headed plainer types of runners not being in such as strong demand with these remaining a similar trade on the year.

Credit must go to all our consigners who strive to breed top quality North of England Mule Gimmer Lambs which are fit to travel and perform anywhere in the country!

A massive thanks goes out to all our buyers both local, and who travel the length and breadth of the country to Kirkby Stephen to source quality lambs, and to which we really are

appreciative to. We also thank and commend all our staff involved with the sale who all play a part by working as a team to make the sale such a success.
