POINTHOUSE PAUL LEADS CARLISLE TRADE AT 42,000GNS
On Saturday 20 February, a crowd of pedigree and commercial breeders made their way to Borderway Mart, Carlisle, to the second early spring sale of the season, where 38 females and 69 bulls went under the hammer. After 12 months to familiarise ourselves with the Covid-19 restrictions, buyers were not phased with enthusiastic bidders at the mart, online and over the phone.
Across the board bulls averaged £8118.48 an increase of £1,470.02 on 2020, with a clearance rate of 79%. 11 of the top-class bulls on offer exceeded 10,000gns, four of these reaching over 25,000gns. Females were also in demand with a peak of 6,000gns and a clearance rate of 98%.
Breed Secretary of the British Limousin Cattle Society Will Ketley, commented “It was an excellent sale that produced a strong average for both the quality females and bulls that were on offer. Both commercial and Pedigree customers that were requiring a bull showed confidence in the breed reflecting the strengths of the Limousin breed as the perfect choice as a Terminal Sire. This and previous recent female sales cement how desirable the Limousin is as a maternal cow, producing cattle the market desires. In such difficult times with Covid and more recent post Brexit issues restricting entries, it’s fantastic to see the sales still flourishing as we look forward to the Spring with excitement.”
Headlining the sale at 42,000gns was Pointhouse Paul, who travelled from over the water to the sale with breeder Michael Diamond, Garvagh, Co Derry. This September-2019 embryo calf is a Goldies Jackpot son, who has an impressive pedigree featuring Ampertaine, Wilodge and Sarkley. Paul is out of the homebred cow Pointhouse Jewel, junior champion of the 2015 Balmoral show. Displaying two sets of the F94L myostatin gene, he is also in the top 10% of the breed, obtaining a beef value of 48. He now calls Cullompton, Devon, home with Michael and Melanie Alford of the Foxhillfarm herd. Commenting on their purchase, the Alford family said “This easy calving sire is quite possibly one of the widest double F94L gene carrying bulls we’ve seen. We’re also delighted to be able to support young Kyle Diamond with this purchase, we’ve always been impressed with his knowledge of the breed at such a young age as well as his commitment and work ethic. Pointhouse Paul will now be our lead flushing sire.”
Mr Diamond was pleased to be able to bring his two lots to Borderway, and also sold Paul’s full ET brother, Pointhouse Pat for 8,500gns. On congratulating Michael on his sale he commented “Best bull we have ever bred, and we are so delighted it’s going to such a fantastic home – that’s a real bonus. In different times it would have been amazing for us to see how he would have done in a show ahead of the sale but still what a fantastic day.”
Pointhouse Paul – 42,000gns
Next in line was Cloughhead President selling for 30,000gns. Presented for sale by G L Hutton, Keswick, Cumbria, President was the first bulls from their pen of four bulls which averaged a cracking 16,500gns. The Cloughhead herd commented “We had an incredible day right through. President, making 30,000gns was special for us as he is sired by our homebred stock bull, Loxley who himself was one of the best bulls we have ever bred, which is why we kept him. There is lots of confidence around which has helped us achieve a special day, selling both males and females.” President is sired by homebred Cloughhead Loxley and out of Cloughhead Cindy who has a French dominated pedigree. The April 2019-born calf was born naturally with myostatin of F94L and Q204X. With a short journey home, President now calls Penrith home with Messrs Jenkinson of the Whinfellpark herd, Clifton Moor.
Cloughhead President – 30,000gns
Also selling for 30,000gns was Goldies Positive, from Bruce Goldie, Townsfoot, Dumfries. Positive is sired by Goldies Nimble and out of dam, Goldies Lisette, a full sister to the 2019 February 30,000gns sale toppers Goldies Owain and Olympia. Carrying two sets of the F94L myostatin gene and boasting a beef value of 51, along with his tremendous figures, he had a positive impact on his perspective buyers. This was purchased in half shares between vendors, Goldies and Hartside Farms, Biggar, Lanarkshire.
Goldies Positive – 30,000gns
Hot on their heels achieving 25,000gns was another bull from the Hutton family, Keswick – Cloughhead Patrick. June 2019-born Patrick is the first Twemlows Morpeth son to be offered for sale, who was purchased by the Cloughhead in May 2018 for 20,000gns, and whose pedigree shows bloodlines such as Swarland and Hartsideanew. Patrick boasts myostatin genes of double F94L and NT821. He goes home with Mr J Pritchard, Evistones Farm, Rochester, Newcastle Upon Tyne to his recently established Evistones herd.
Cloughhead Patrick – 25,000gns
Next up was Goldies Pilot, another from the Goldies herd, Townsfoot who sold for 19,000gns. This June 2019 embryo calf is sired by the 22,000gns Goldies Fandango and out of the homebred Goldies Flair, who also bred the 14,000gns Goldies Joker. This bull boasts myostatin of F94L and Q204X. Pilot heads home to Nantglyn, Denbigh with M L Howatson and Son.
Top price for the Garyvaughan herd was gained by Percy who scored 14,000gns. Presented by C V Lewis, Welshpool, Powys, this August 2019-born bull who was born unassisted has been a standout from day one. Sired by the 35,000gns Foxhillfarm Manhattan who was purchased by the herd in May 2017 his dam is Garyvaughan Ilesia who goes back to the 7,000gns Bankdale Amber and has bred bulls to 6,000gns. Percy carries myostatin of F94L and Q204X. Taken home by Mr Harker, he now calls Carnforth, Lancashire home with the Overthwaite herd.
The bidding did not stop there for the Overthwaite herd, who also went on to purchase Procters Paladru for 12,000gns. One of the last bulls to go through the ring, Paladru was presented for sale by Procters Farms near Clitheroe. This October 2019-born embryo calf boasts double F94L myostatin and a beef value of 41. He is sired by the 65,000gns Aultside Meanmachine and out of the homebred cow Procters Gwen, a Haltcliffe Vermont granddaughter.
The first of four bulls to make 10,000gns was Goldies Oswald, a September 2019-born embryo calf presented by the aforementioned Goldies herd, Townsfoot, Dumfries. Sired by the noted Wilodge LJ he is out of the homebred cow, Goldies Musical, an Ampertaine Elgin daughter. Oswald carries myostatin of NT821 and Q204X and granddam Glamour is a full sister to the dam of the 30,000gns Goldies Owain and Goldies Olympia. Mr R Kennedy, Aberfeldy, Perthshire take him home.
Ronick Puppet was next to make 10,000gns, presented by R Dick, Mains of Throsk Farm, Stirling. He is sired by the 45,000gns Ampertaine Jamboree, who was purchased by the herd in October 2015 and his dam, Ronick Joreen is one of the best cows in the herd, a daughter of Rathconville Eugene who has over 450 progeny. The June 2019-born Puppet displays myostatin of F94L and NT821 along with a beef value of 45. He now calls Northumberland home, with M Moore and Son, Haltwhistle.
Shortly after, 10,000gns was achieved again by Kinniside Pluto. The June 2019-born Pluto was brought forward by G and AE Marrs and Son with only a short journey to the sale from Cleator, Cumbria. Pluto carries two sets of the F94L myostatin gene and is sired by Dylans Irnbru, a Sympa son and out of the homebred Kinniside Iris. This wide and well fleshed bull heads east to Kirkby Stephen with Mr Beckwith, Barras.
Last to reach five figures was the sought after Trueman Piccolo making 10,000gns. Travelling from over the water with H Savage and Sons from Newry, County Down, he is one of the first sons to be sold from the 20,000gns Telfers Munster. Dam, Trueman Foxtrot is a prolific breeder within the herd, with daughter Trueman Lute winning overall interbreed champion at the Balmoral show in 2017 and son Trueman Newton achieving reserve overall champion at the 2018 May Carlisle sale. The September 2019-born Piccolo shows off myostatin of NT821 and Q204X and a beef value of 40, he attracted online bidder Mr Anderson, Strathdon, Aberdeen.
Hot on their heels was Impulsive Phoenix who was the first of four bulls to achieve 9,500gns when he went under the hammer. This May 2019-born bull was presented by Steven Wilson from nearby Corby Hill, Carlisle. Phoenix was sired by stock bull Loosebeare Justin who was purchased by the herd in October 2015, while dam Romford Jessica boasts back pedigree of Wilodge, Bankdale and Kype. His full brother Implusive Omg sold for 10,000gns at last years sale. Phoenix goes north with T J Hall & Son, Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Also achieving 9,500gns was Maraiscote Peanuts, top price of the day for the Maraiscote herd. Brought forward by J Nimmo, Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, Peanuts boasts myostatin of F94L and Q204X and a beef value of 51, which places him in the top 1% of the breed. This June-2019 bull is sired by the 50,000gns Bassingfield Machoman, who won best stock bull in the Scottish clubs 2020 herd competition and is out of the homebred Maraiscote Hazel. All this meant Mr Strout, was prepared to pay more than peanuts, taking him home to Stronsay, Orkney.
Next to gain 9,500gns was Thorninghurst Pringle, the highest price of this herds pen of six offered for sale. Sired by Glenrock Nemo, Pringle is one of his first sons to be offered for sale and is out of Lowgate Jenna. This July 2019-born bull has a myostatin status of F94L and NT821 and heads on to the Welsh borders with the Morris Brothers, Craven Arms, Shropshire.
Closely following at 9,000gns was Loosebeare President, presented by EW Quick, Crediton, Devon. This July 2019-born bull carries two sets of the F94L myostatin gene and is sired by the 19,000gns Ampertaine Jeronimo, who was purchased by the herd in October 2015. He is out of the homebred cow Loosebeare Gaga, a daughter of Gronw Cheeky who was purchased by the Loosebeare herd in 2008. President stays local, being purchased by Mr Gollop, Cullompton, Devon.
Females
A selection of females were sold, which were highly sought after from buyers. A clearance rate of 98% was seen with an average of £3163.82, a strong increase of £706.82 on the previous year.
Norman Pattern held the top spot selling for 6,000gns. Brought forward from Norman Farming Company, Little Orton, Carlisle, in the collection of seven females offered for sale by them, five of which took the spotlight of the female section. Pattern is a March 2019-born heifer sired by the homebred bull Norman Largo, a Plumtree Fantastic son, and out of homebred cow Norman Mosaic. This heifer displays a myostatin status of F94L and Q204X. Pattern caught the eye of J and L Hoggarth and she goes home to Ulpha, Cumbria to their Whitfell herd.
Next is Norman Popcandy who achieved 5,000gns. This is a daughter of the 12,000gns Anside Loki, who was purchased by the herd in 2016. Out of homebred cow Norman Icelolly, this May 2019 heifer obtains the rare combination of NT419 and NT821 myostatin.
Next in the trade stakes making 4,500gns, was Norman Pam. The August 2019-born Norman Largo daughter, and this time bred out of Norman Narcissus, a Claragh Franco daughter. Pam boasts a myostatin of NT821 and Q204X.
Also hitting 4,500gns was Norman Polly, who boasts myostatin of NT821 and Q204X. Again, a daughter of the Plumtree Fantastic son, Norman Largo, and out of another homebred cow, Norman Lory. Purchasers T P Atkinson take the July 2019-born heifer to Ulverston, Cumbria to the Arradfoot herd.
Next through the ring was Norman Puppet who went under the hammer for 3,800gns. This April-2019 born Norman Largo daughter is out of another homebred cow, Norman Loyal. Puppet displays myostatin of F94L and NT821. Puppet played on strings of D C Evans who takes her home to Llanrhaeadr, Denbigh.
Top price for the Barrons herd was 3,800gns achieved by Barrons Rosalie presented by W Barron, Burnhope, Durham. This January 2020-born Barrons OJ daughter, is out of the homebred cow Barrons Mango, a Lodge Hamlet daughter. Rosalie takes a short trip home to Barnard Castle with Messrs Allinson, Baldersdale to their Westbriscoe herd.
Also hitting 3,800gns was Barrons Rizme, from the same home. Rizme is a Barrons Major daughter and bred out of Barrons Izme, a Sympa daughter. This January 2020-born heifer heads home to DE Evans, Mold to the Esmors herd.
Cloughhead Phyllis is the next up, going under the hammer for 3,700gns. This July 2019-born heifer is sired by the homebred Cloughhead Loxley, an Objat grandson, and is out of the homebred cow, Cloughhead Gwyneth. Phyllis heads home with J W Porter, Gunnerside, Richmond to the Oxnop herd.
The December 2019-born embryo calf, Goldies Princess achieved 3,600gns when presented by Bruce Goldie, Townsfoot, Dumfries. Displaying two sets of the F94L gene, this Goldies Juggler daughter is out of Goldies Flair, dam of Goldies Pilot who sold for 19,000gns shortly after on sale day. Princess goes over the water to Mr R Lee, Enniskillen, Fermanagh.
