JERSEY JEWELS SALE
WEDNESDAY 18TH SEPTEMBER 2024
Glamour Girls Go Top At Jersey Jewels
The inaugural Jersey Jewels Sale held at the Borderway Sales Centre attracted a special selection of Jersey cattle from several of the top Jersey breeders in Scotland and the North of England. Trade topped at 2,220gns for milking heifers with the average price coming to £1764, with in calf heifers topping at 1,700gns.
Buyers had a tremendous group of milking cows and heifers to select from. The Logan herd owned by the Yates family from Castle Douglas sold 15 cows and heifers in milk topping at 2,200gns on two occasions. The first was for Logan Victorious Glamour who was bought by the Parker family from Ayrshire.
Logan Casino Glamour was the second to sell for the joint top price going to the Hodge family from Ayrshire. This stylish young heifer had classified Very Good 87 and was due again to FirstCut sexed in January. Both of these two heifers were bred from a special Canadian cow family going back to Oaklea Gemni Ginger EX94 who was Grand Champion at the Canadian National Show in 1989.
The Kerricks herd from Dumfries sold a quality group of modern Jerseys all displaying the ability to produce large volumes of high quality milk and they topped at 1,950gns for Kerricks Video Claire. She was freshly calved in August and was bought by the Parker family from Ayrshire.
In calf heifers topped at 1,700gns for Longing Venus Bandangle who was consigned by the Armitage family from Yorkshire. This super stylish heifer displayed a ton of potential to develop into a special show heifer. She was sired by River Valley Venus VIP and was bred from two Very Good dams by Oliver-P and Ringmaster. She was bought by the Leitch family from Ayrshire.
The Kingsbeck herd consigned a very impressive group of 17 in calf heifers mostly due in November and all sired by top sires including Video, Vip, Choko Chief & Victorious to average £1521. They topped at 1,580gns for Kingsbeck Victorious Starweed who was bought by the Mitchel family from Ayrshire. She was bred from a high production dam that produced almost 9000kgs in her second lactation.
The short bred heifers and the bulling heifers sold well below their true value with a large percentage of the heifers in these categories not selling. Bulling heifers topped at 850gns for a daughter of VJ Hanulus who was consigned by the Callymains herd from Gate House of Fleet.
The next dairy sale at Borderway takes place on the 2nd September and features 400 fresh cows and heifers, mid lactation cows, in calf heifers and bulling heifers in the October Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale.
