Kirkby Stephen Annual Show & Sale of Continental and Mule Ewes and Gimmers and Rams

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd Kirkby Stephen held their annual sale of Continental, Mule Ewes, Shearlings and Gimmer lambs when a catalogued entry of 1,780 sheep were on offer.

Topping the female section at £410 was a Beltex shearling from Messrs Skidmore Needless hall, Toronto which was purchased by Rachael Tiplady, Red House Farm, Barnard Castle.

This home also sold Beltex shearlings to £370 and £355 both purchased by Messrs Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall, Keswick. The consignment of 16 shearlings from this home averaging £317.19.

A pen of eight Park Cheviot shearlings sold to make £370 from Chloe Longstaff, Ascot House, Murton which were purchased by Dowson & Sartin, Battle Hill, Barnard Castle.

The flock dispersal from Messrs Atkinson, Abbey Park topped at £340 for a pen of five texel shearlings which sold to Messrs Wilson, Ashstead, Kendal. This same home sold a pen of five Texel shearlings to make £325 to Rachael Tiplady, Red House Farm, and another pen of five making £320 to D Jones, Carlisle.

With this home also selling a pen of ten Texel cross shearlings to make £258 selling to Messrs Samuel, Annan and pens of fourteen Texel cross shearlings making £245 selling to Messrs Sutton, Kendal and other pen of fifteen Texel cross shearlings making £240 selling to Messrs Mason, Penrith.

A pen of seven three & four crop Texel ewes from this home sold to make £245 selling to Messrs Jones, Carlisle.

The consignment of 150 texel cross shearlings to four crop ewes sold to average £230.31.

Messrs Pedley, Prospect Farm Cottage sold the second prize pen of five texel shearlings to make £298 selling to Messrs Bayles, Haithwaite, Richmond.

Our judge local quality prime lamb producer Mr J Maughan, Ash Garth awarded the first place to a pen of five Texel cross shearlings which sold to make £250 from Messrs Wilson, Bankdale, Carlisle selling to the judge.

The third prize pen of five was awarded to a pen of five Beltex shearlings which made £245 from Messrs Buckle, Buckles Farm selling to Messrs Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall.

The ewe section topped at £265 for Beltex from Messrs Elliott, Espland House, Penrith which were purchased by Messrs Simpson, Wigglesworth.

Texel ewes topped at £250 from Lewis Staley, Popin Cottage, Kaber which were purchased by Messrs Bayles, Haithwaite, Richmond.

Leading the gimmer lambs at £345 was a pure texel from H&B Wharton, Galloper rise, Tebay which was purchased by Racheal Tiplady, with this home also selling texel gimmer lambs to £270, £260 bought by Messrs Walton, Goodlie Hill Cottage and Messrs Armstrong, Bonny Rigg, Penrith.

Craig Barnes, Wild Boar Barn, Mallerstang sold a pure Dutch Spotted gimmer lamb to make £320 purchased by Messrs Jones, Greenbank, Brough Sowerby.

Messrs Armstrong, Bonnyrigg Penrith sold a pen of three Blue Texel gimmer lambs to make £240 and another pen of blue texels at £200.

Shearling gimmers achieved an overall overage for all breeds of £208.21 which was up £11.02 on the year with aged ewes averaged £173.66 which was up £28.78.

Breeding rams topped at £1850 for the first prize texel and overall reserve shearling from Messrs Slack, Stoneriggs which sold to the judge Mr Andrew Patchett, West Summerside, Ripon.

This same home also sold Texel cross shearlings to £1350 selling to Messrs Chippendale, Wharton Hall, Kirkby Stephen and also selling others to £1200 selling to Messrs Den, Mount Pleasant Farm, Brough.

Next selling for £1300 twice were Texel cross Beltex shearlings from Messrs Millar & Partners, Crookholm farm, Cannonbie, selling to Messrs Whitehead, Thwaite, Richmond and Mesrss Fawcett, Hollins Farm, Richmond.

Pure Texel shearlings sold to £1250 from Hollins View Farm, Brough Sowerby which was purchased by Messrs Dargue, Smardale Hall with this home also selling other texel shearlings to £1200 purchased by Messrs Raine & Davidson.

Messrs Hastewell, The Buildings Farm, Kaber also sold pure Texel shearlings to £1200 purchased by Messrs Rukin, Park Lodge Farm, Richmond.

Topping the tup lambs was the first placed pure texel from H&B Wharton, Tebay which sold for £550 to Messrs Atkinson, New Hutton, Kendal.

The overall tup average for all ages £602.22 was achieved which was up £70.99.
