The Annual Rare & Minority Breeds Sale held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Saturday 21st September.

Cattle:

Longhorn: a small entry of Longhorns were forward, which included the dispersal of the non pedigree longhorn herd on behalf of TA Storey & Partners, Penton. This section was topped by a cow and calf unit who sold for £1700. Messrs Bailley sold Wizzivk Nina along with her unregistered bull calf at foot for £1600.

Dexter: Messrs Darnbrook sold the top priced Dexter, Planetree Radha a yearling heifer sired by Avalon Heracles for £1400. Followed on with an in calf heifer consigned by Candy King. Avalon Lady Rena, sired by Gaveston Guinness and sold for £1200 in calf to Avalon Titanium. Selling to the same price was Littlecombe Pinchposie, a yearling heifer sired by Withytrees Sovereign.

Candy King’s herd sold another in calf heifer for £1100, this time for Avanlon Lady Ashina, sired by Gaveston Guinness and sold in calf to Avalon Titanium.

Sheep:

Kerry Hills: J&P Owens once again dominated the sale, achieving a new centre record price of 4000gns for a yearling ram. Their entry, Woodhouse 2 Diplomat, was also crowned overall show champion. Bred from a homebred ewe and sired by Dalwyne Zeus, this outstanding ram will be joining the Bankhead flock of JC Hewitt in Penrith, Cumbria.

The second-highest price of the day went to RJ Stott of Lockerbie with his ram lamb, Hilltop Evan. This was a new breed record set for the highest priced ram lamb. This promising lamb, sired by Birsca Black Magic out of a Grassknop ewe, fetched 3000gns and was purchased by J. Graham for the Birsca flock at Lockerbie.

A noteworthy entry was a three year old tup, Woodhouse 2 Bonkers, from A. Burgess, which sold for 1500gns to L Stewarts for her Balbrae Flock in Glasgow, further underscoring the appeal of this established bloodline.

In the ewe lamb category, RF & DJ Price’s from the Penetrant Flock entry sold for 1200gns, finding its way to J&P Owens’ Woodhouse 2 flock. The lamb was sired by a Homeland ram and out of a homebred ewe.

J. Graham also secured a strong price of 1000gns for a yearling ewe by Whitcastles Angus out of Birsca Amy, which was bought by W. Johnston of Consett. Close behind, a Whitcastles yearling ewe from Mrs. L.J. Steen of Moffat fetched 900gns. This ewe was sired by a Leinthall ram out of a homebred dam

Jacobs: A smaller entry of Jacob sheep this year, resulted in a top price of £550 twice, both for twin shearling rams named Nisbet Doger and Danny from Jacqueline Neill, he was sired by Dunmor Five Star. The next best at £380 was paid for a shearling gimmer from the Low Barns flock of Messrs RFS Newall, she was sired by Pentrenant Poldark.

Shetlands: The National Show and sale of Shetland sheep had a large attendance of exhibitors and sheep. This section topped at £300 twice, firstly for Ewingston Alice, a white prolific show ewe lamb sired by Island Ollie and secondly by Muncaster Ophrah, a Black ewe lamb sired by Muncaster George. She was sold in aid of the susan Channon Brest Cancer Trust who supported the Rieborn Family.

Selling to the next best at £280 was a Grey Katmoget 2021 born ewe names Blackford Hazel, consigned by David Alcorn and Gavin Ingram. She was sired by Lomond Of Cockairey and out of Blackford Diana.

Following on from the same pen was Annanvale Cracarys, a 2020 born White ewe, she was sired by Muncaster Felix and out of Annanvale Ashera, she sold for £240.

Martin & Lydia Greenfield sold a ewe lamb for £240, named Rayfield Coco Pop, a Moorit out of Wolds Artimus.

Any other Sheep:

Racka sheep had 100% clearance rate, selling to a top of £500 (x9) for a run of shearling gimmers from Stephen Cooksley.

Badger Face Welsh Mountain Torddu ram lamb from Gareth Jones, Carmarthenshire sold to £400.

Hampshire Down Ewe lambs sold to £280 from Ellie & Grant Faulds, Ayrshire.

Oxford Downs sold to £270 (x7) all for shearling gimmers from AW Rutherford, Gretna.

Wensleydale shearling gimmers topped at £250 (x2) both consigned by JT & N Monkhouse, Haltwhistle.

Goats: A large entry of goats sold to a top of £600 for Jollybody Dora a Golden Guernsey kid from Messrs Everitt, Bishop Auckland. Next best was Jollybody Francis another Golden Guernsey kid again from Messrs Everitt selling to £500.

Pygmys peaked at £300 for a Nanny from Messrs Gardhouse, Dalston.

Boers sold to £190 for Rubyred Cody a 2022 born Nanny from Messrs Browne, Aberdeenshire.

Messrs Browne, Aberdeenshire also sold 2 Anglo Nubian Billy goats for £150 each.

Pigs: A small consignment of piglets were forward and sold to a top of £160 for a Pietrain x Gloucester Old Spot piglet.

Donkeys: Topping the Donkey section was Mr Corlett, Cockermouth selling a Jack donkey selling to £650, followed by a Jenny Donkey from the same home selling to £600.
