On Wednesday 8th January Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of Calves. A mammoth show of 545 calves. Trade was on fire from the offset and continued right to the very end with all types up £80 - £100 on the last sale which took place 3 weeks ago.

Topping the sale at £750 was an outstanding 3 month old British Blue from Emma Wilson, Evening Hill, Thursby. The next to break the £700 barrier was a 4 month old British Blue bull from Wilson, Woodside, Wreay selling for £735. Aberdeen Angus bulls to £690 from first time consignor NW & RW Boyd, Alton Farm, Stranraer, with other selling to £680 from regular consignors C Horsley Ltd, Whitrigg Grange, Wigton.
British Blue calves were in hot demand with 50 head selling to over £600. R & J Byers, White Hill sold a pen of 3 British Blue bulls to £670. Andrew Vance, Portyerrock sold a pen of 4 British Blue bulls to £650. Limousin bulls topped at £615 from WM Sloan & Co, Ryemuir, Lochmaben. Montbeliarde bulls sold to £605 for a pair of 3 month olds from RG & MJT Farish, East Farm, Newton Arlosh. Hereford bulls sold to £600 from M Henderson, Dalston. 2 month old Limousin bulls sold to £595 from IT & EM Carlyle, Bleaberry Rigg. Low Wood Dairy, Warwick Bridge sold a pen of three 2 month old British Blue bulls to £530. 3 month old Simmental bulls sold to £505 from D Hyslop, Meinside. Brownrigg Hall Ltd, Allonby sold a 1 month old Limousin bull to £445. 1 month old British Blue bulls to £410 twice from JJ & M Mattinson, Rosewain.
Holsten Friesian bulls were another flyer, with plenty of buyers in attendance for this type, topping at £390 from Peastree Farm Ltd, Durdar. 1 month old Aberdeen Angus sold to £385 from M Stephenson, Winter Tarn. Ayrshire Bulls sold to £380 from GG Baynes & son, Marleycote, Hexham.
Heifers sold a lot sharper too, topping at £670 for a 2 month old Limousin from IT & EM Carlyle, Bleaberry Rigg. British Blues topped at £640 from low House Farming, Armathwaite. R & J Byres, Whitehills, Walton sold a pen of 3 British Blue heifers to £620. Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £620 from JB Sloan, Parklands, Johnstonebridge. 35 heifers sold in excess of £500. 1 month old British Blue heifers sold to £375 from J Sewell, Mayfield. 1 month old Simmental Heifers sold to £310 from CM & P Hall, Whitechester, Haltwhistle.
