STOWBECK SET THE PACE WITH A FANCY CHASE
Milkers average £2680
The first Border & Lakeland Sale of 2026 attracted a quality offering of cows and heifers from many of the top breeders in the North of England and Scotland. Trade topped at 3,500gns with the overall average for milking heifers coming to £2680. Despite the current downturn within the milk and commodity markets trade and demand for dairy cattle remained strong with ten animals selling for £3000 or above with the average up £41 on the year driven by the beef values for both cast cows and store cattle.
The show was sponsored by Paragon Veterinary Group and judged by Fraser Nicholson from Dumfries, his Champion went to Stowbeck Chase Dewdrop from Skirwith Hall Farms near Penrith. She was sired by Chase and bred from a strong line of cows with Superior Production awards and massive lifetime production. She sold for 3,300gns to Mr Forshaw from near Preston.
Standing Reserve Champion was Hillhead Ryder Barbara from the Fleming family from near Gretna. She was a freshly calved cow giving over 50kgs and was sired by Ryder Red. She had won a very strong cow class earlier in the morning and was bought by the Turnbull’s from near Penrith. Hillhead sold four cows and heifers to average over £2700.
