BERRYHOLME CELEBRATE IN STYLE
A huge crowd of over 1000 Holstein breeders and enthusiasts from across the UK and Ireland travelled to Berry Holme Farm near Kendal to celebrate with the Wright family their achievement of winning Holstein UK’s Premier Herd Title in 2019. The farm is situated in one of England’s most picturesque places with breath taking views. Following the herd inspection in the morning and lunch the crowd filled the sale ring area in anticipation for the Best of Berryholme sale.
Thirty-five animals had been carefully selected with all the most prolific breeding lines represented in an impressive catalogue. The trade topped at 27,000gns for a close to perfect yearling heifer from the Flo cow family, milking cows topped at 10,000gns for a young three-year-old cow. The sale averaged almost £6000 with 40% of the females selling for £5000 or more.
David Wright’s first ever purchase when he started his farming carer was Holmland Storm Flo who went on to gain legendary status winning the National Holstein Show in 2003 and became the matriarch of the herd through her incredible ability to breed special progeny. Members of this great cow family were highly sought after and topping the sale at 27,000gns was Berryholme Silvio Flo who was purchased by James and Amy McNeil from the Cairnpat Holstein herd in Stranraer. Silvio Flo was a close to perfect daughter of Villy Silvio and had an equally perfect pedigree. Her dams’ classifications were EX93, EX94, EX94, EX92 & EX96 and featured two National Champions in her direct lineage.
Nine members of the Flo cow family sold to average £8,283, Berryholme Doc Flo sold for 7,500gns to the Innes family from Nairn. Sired by King Doc this stylish calf has three National Champions in her pedigree, her dam was an attractive Diamondback daughter that classified Very Good 87 as a two-year-old. A syndicate including Drointon Holsteins, Peter Cotton & Jake Manning bought Berryholme Sidekick Flo for 7,000gns her dam was an Excellent 92 Bankroll from an Excellent Atwood and then Berryholme Shottle Flo who won the National Holstein Show in 2010.
Berryholme Callen Rae sold for 10,000gns to Robert McInnes from Ayrshire. Rae was classified Very Good 88 as a three-year-old her dam was a special member of the herd classifying Excellent 93 by McCutchen, the fifth dam in the pedigree was Scientific Debutante Rae who was Reserve Champion at world Dairy Expo in 2005. Her six-month-old sister by Dealmaker sold for 3,800gns to Carldanton Holsteins near Bolton.
One of the most recent cow families to join the Berryholme herd has been daughters of Belfast Goldwyn Lasenza. This is quickly becoming a great family in the herd and selling for 9,500gns was Berryholme Sidekick Lasenza. This powerful framed heifer was due in November to Lambda sexed and is a grand daughter of the All Canadian, Belfast Goldwyn Lasenza. She was purchased by Brian O’Connor from Co. Cork Ireland.
Another astute purchase David made was buying Mikali Seaver Erle as a young calf, she had similar traits and style as his first investment Holmland Storm Flo. This attractive cow was Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show in 2015 and was the winning two-year-old at the National and UK Dairy Expo the previous year. Her Beemer daughter who was due to Arrow sexed sold for 6,200gns to the Dalserf Holstein herd in Lanarkshire.
Developing one of the best Holstein herd in the world can only be done by having great cow families and the Maud line has been a consistent cow family at Berryholme over the years. Selling for 6,000gns was Berryholme Silvio Maud who was purchased by the Millar family from N. Ireland who purchased several of the stars in the Best of Berryholme sale. She was a recently calved two-year-old who had classified Very Good 86 with her first three dams by Windbrook, Terrason and Rudolph all classified Excellent.
Tri-Day Ashlyn, the winning World Dairy Expo and Royal Winter Fair Champion has had a massive impact on the Holstein breed through her prolific breeding ability. One of the standout heifers in the sale was Berryholme Pepper Ashlyn who sold for 6,500gns to the Innes family from Nairn. Her dam was a Very Good 89 McCutchen followed by Butz-Butler Durham Amy EX95, Eo Siemers Ashlyns Angle EX96 and then Tri-Day Ashlyn EX96.
The most influential Holstein cow in the history of the breed is KHW Regiment Apple Red and her great granddaughter by Sidekick sold for 5,500gns to the Grangehall Holstein herd in Lanarkshire. Her dam was a Very Good 88 three-year-old with massive butterfat records, next dam was an Excellent 94 Uno and then Apple.
