Nationally & internationally respected agricultural auctioneers, Harrison & Hetherington, are about to mark the 50th anniversary of their hugely successful Borderway Mart complex in Carlisle. From its opening sale on Friday 23rd August 1974, Harrison & Hetherington at Borderway has grown into the cornerstone of the H&H Group’s network of seven marts across the North West and the Borders, and one of the most successful livestock trading hubs in the UK.

The Four Nations Come Together for Agri Expo 2024

Judges from the four corners of the UK and Ireland will take on the challenge of tapping out the winners from the best of British livestock, at this year’s internationally recognised Borderway Agri Expo in Carlisle on Friday 1st November 2024. Widely recognised as the UK’s premier livestock event, and watched live online by thousands of people all over the world, Borderway Agri Expo attracts the fiercest competition for top honors from breeders and farmers who bring their award winning cattle and sheep to the Borderway show ring from across the British Isles.

In spite of the weather, Harrison & Hetherington Sales Manager & Auctioneer Mark Richardson reports an outstanding six months at the Kirkby Stephen Mart, with livestock prices reaching record levels. “In the last six months like the other H&H Livestock Centres, our prime sheep trade has hit an all-time record at Kirkby Stephen, with phenomenal sheep prices which have never been reached before.

Celebrating 50 years at Borderway!

To mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of its headquarters at Borderway Mart this August, Harrison & Hetherington will step back in time and try to recreate the first sale as it was 50 years previous. To mark the occasion, the Harrison & Hetherington team are looking for photos, mementos, and memories from the farming community of the inaugural sale, opening, and early days at Borderway. Since that moment half a century ago when H&H made the monumental move from its old and aptly named Botchergate site in Carlisle city centre, Borderway has grown into the foremost livestock trading centre in the country.

‘Dairy is much more than just milk’ – this was the take home message for students who attended the Digital Dairy Chain’s inaugural ‘Think Dairy Careers Expo’ on the 23rd April. The event was run in partnership with Harrison & Hetherington, at the Borderway Mart in Carlisle, to help address the skills shortage within the dairy industry.
